A Memorable week in Puerto Rico : Part Two

Day Four

Hey guys as promised, here is the break down for part two of my trip to Puerto Rico! So we checked out of our Airbnb and made our way to Guánica. Guánica is town in southern Puerto Rico, and about two hours drive from San Juan. Driving to Guanica brought back memories of my childhood in Liberia when my father and I used to take trips to Kakata; a city in Liberia. It was also just pouring down rain so that made the drive even more intense. Two hours later we arrived to our destination...Copamarina Beach Resort. Giant palm trees, clear skies, and a warm breeze. The scenery of the resort was breathtaking. After we checked in we went to the bar for cocktails; I also had my first coconut on the island. It was well worth it. Later, we relaxed on the beach and decided to do dinner near the ocean.

Day Five

Day 5 and ya girl is a quarter-century! I started my day with a delicious breakfast. Afterwards we did some water activities (we went kayaking). I was so scared because it was my second time kayaking, my first experience was not so great. Kayaking is pretty simple once you get the hang of it. Most people kayak to the closest island next to the resort to go fishing and snorkeling but I was too afraid and we missed the last boat tour to the island. After a day full of activities, it was time to relax in the hot tub! Nothing feels better than sitting in a warm water and talking about life. Hot tubs are really meant to calm you and put you to sleep because I was exhausted! I was too tired to get out of bed to get cute. While laying in bed, We heard a knock on the door. It was one of the waitresses with a cute chocolate cake with ice cream dessert with a little candle to top it off. On the plate, it said “Happy B-day.” It’s the little things that count sometimes; I felt so special and appreciated. So yeah guys I spent my the night of my birthday eating chocolate cake and ice cream while watching Netflix.

Day Six

It’s our last day in Puerto Rico and we had planned to visit El Yunque National Forest but due to a flash flood watch on the island we decided it wouldn’t be a good idea. We checked out of the resort and made our way to Ponce. Ponce is about 40 minutes away from our resorts. We visited Museo Castillo Serralles. We didn’t explore the area for too long because we were trying to beat rush hour to head back to San Juan. We made it to San Juan right before the busy traffic. We had to make one last stop to Fatty’s to see our guy Tony! Sadly Tony wasn’t at work that day. We checked out a few bars. At this point I wasn’t keeping track of places names just more so trying to soak everything in since we only had a few hours before we head to the airport. We spent our last hour in old San Juan sitting in Pigeon park to watch the calmness of the city.

That’s the end of my memorable week in Puerto Rico y’all! I will be visiting again. By the way the car rental company we used was Charlie Rental. They have multiple office locations on the island and they are pretty affordable.

A Memorable Week in Puerto Rico : Part One

Hey guys! So as some of you guys may know or have heard, I spent a week in Puerto recently to celebrate my 25th birthday. Turning a quarter century for me is a major milestone and the only way I wanted to spend it was relaxing, eating good food, drinks, and most importantly, great company. My trip to Puerto Rico was exactly how I hoped it would be so let’s get started!

Day One:

My partner and I arrived in Puerto Rico by early Saturday afternoon. The first thing we did was check into our Airbnb which was a beautiful oasis. Our host, Frank, was very welcoming and pleased to me us. The oasis was very clean and the interior design was Victorian vintage, from the bedroom to the bathroom. With just a one bedroom, and a bath space, the oasis is suitable for primarily couples. So I would highly recommend it for lovebirds who are looking for a more romantic space in San Juan. Later in the evening, we visited La Placita de Santurce. La Placita is a market square that is more than a 100 years old. During the day, the square is full of shops to buy fresh fruits and from early evening to night, restaurants and bars are open to have a great time! La Placita reminds me of Bourbon Street atmosphere in New Orleans, as the night gets darker the street gets louder. The first spot we went to at La Placita was Asere Cubano. Asere is a Cuban restaurant cozy and casual vibe. I had their tropical ceviche with green plantain on the side. We also got a few drinks at Asere. I had passion fruit mojito for the first time. I have a mission now to find a bar that serves passion fruit mojito in Minnesota. Wish me luck y’all! For veggies lovers, Asere has a meal called confit eggplant and it looked quite good. We also hit up a few bars in the square and watched the locals salsa dance with so much passion and love for one another.

Day Two:

Second day in Puerto Rico was spent learning the Island’s history. Being the history nerd that I am, I was so anxious and excited to learn about Puerto Rico history, and what better way to do that then visiting Castillo San Cristobal and Castillo San Felipe del Morro. Both Forts were built by the Spaniards in the 1500s to protect the city of San Juan from attack by land mainly from the the British, and Dutch who were also fighting to claim Puerto Rico. The Spaniards enslaved the Tainos people, who were natives of the island. Like the Native American genocides in America, most of the Tainos people died from diseases and Spanish oppression. Africans were also enslaved in Puerto until 1873, when slavery was abolished on the island. Puerto Rico became a U.S territory, after the Spanish-American War when Spain was forced to sign a treaty to give up Guam and Puerto Rico to the United States. Both forts were active military locations during WWI and WWII.

Whew! That was just a brief description of history we learned from visiting both Forts. I highly recommend this tour! FYI the pass you purchase to have access to the Forts is a 7 day pass. The receptionists leave out this detail because they want tourists to spend more money. You might be thinking why would I need a pass for more than 1 day? Actually if we knew this information earlier we would had explored the Forts on two separate days due to how massive both Forts are. There’s so much to learn and see that a few hours out of a day is just not enough! Both Forts are about 15-20 minutes walking distance. We took a rest break to munch on some empanadas and local beers.

After a long day learning the history of Puerto Rico, we relaxed in the pool at our oasis. Later, we had dinner at La Madre. La Madre is a Mexican style restaurant. For my margaritas lovers, this is the spot for you! The restaurant also have a night-club vibe to it so the music kept me awake. During the first couple days of the trip, I had a hard time staying up late because of my work schedule, I’m used to being in bed by 11:00 pm the latest. Nevertheless, my second day in San Juan was one of the best times I had in Puerto Rico.

Day Three:

It’s day 3 and the last day in San Juan but not quite and for sure not the end of our trip. We spent the day having a mini food tour and explored the neighborhoods in Old San Juan. This trip we wanted to be where the locals be and eat what the locals eat. We found a local restaurant called Fatty’s, it was hidden away in a back alleyway in old San Juan. Fatty’s is a Caribbean restaurant. On the menu you can find varieties of plantains from green plantains, to sweet plantains. Pigeon beans and rice, as well as jerk chicken. Of course let's not forget those mouth-watering empanadas! Funnily enough our waiter, Tony, is someone that became a highlight of our trip. Tony had a great energy to him and you can see the passion he had for his job. He suggested a few restaurants for us to try as well as some spots that offer great vegetarian dishes! One of the spots he emphasized was a place called Greengos. He said they had great vegetarian meals. He was right! Even the empanadas at Greengos were on the healthy side. We also chatted with Tony about our plans for the next few days in Puerto Rico. We told him we would be venturing to Guanica and he seemed really excited because he grew up in the area.

After we left Greengos, I decided to do a photoshoot. During my shoot, one of the locals stopped with her dog and offered to give me a few posing tips. This led to almost an hour conversation. She and Levi bonded over having dogs with similar personality. I wish I could remember her name. She also went on and showed us some historic sites we can visit in old San Juan. As well as telling us which gift shops to be mindful of in the area that charge tourists extra. We came to find out this local was a tour guide and she requested a tip. We gave her a tip but felt like she really tricked us and got a few bucks out of us! Regardless, she was great company!

Later that day, we went to Playa Ultimo Trolley beach which is part of Ocean Park Beach. Our Airbnb host recommended this beach due to it being less crowded. The beach is a favorite spot among the locals. The beach wasn’t too packed when we arrived. Since it was Memorial Day, a lot of families were on the beach but they were getting ready to leave when we arrived because it was already late in the evening. A kind gentleman who had his kiosk set up on the beach was renting beach chairs, he gave us free chairs, and also made a complimentary drink. I took a nice nap at the beach and waited in anticipation for the sunset.

There you have it guys! My 3 days spent in San Juan wrapped up in this post. The highlights of being in San Juan is how friendly people were. From our waiter Tony to the lady who decided to give us a “free” tour, and the guy who willingly gave us free beach chairs and made us that excellent drink. They were the highlights of this trip. Their kindness also reminded me of the importance of human relationship and why I love the job that I do.

Asymmetrical & Prints

New week, new slay! Yes! As you guys can see I’m showing some skin. I guess Mother Nature felt sorry for us and gave us a taste of warm weather. Too bad we having a blizzard storm later this week. A blizzard in April? How could Mother Nature do us like that! When it comes to Minnesota weather, unpredictability is her middle name. Anyways, I know you guys are not here to read about Minnesota weather antics so let's get to it!

This weeks look is all about vintage chic. details, details, and more details is what this look is all about. I love the asymmetrical details on this plaid skirt from H&M. The length proportion of the skirt is perfect. Not long but not too short, and it’s perfect for my hourglass shaped figure. This tie-belt blouse can be worn multiple ways based on the look you are going for. I’ve worn this top several times and by far this is my favorite look. I let the belt on the top to hang longer to add more details to the look. Remember it's all about details!

I was very hesitant on what shoes to wear with this look. I’m not a huge fan of animal prints shoes but I saw these low-heeled mules at Target that I couldn’t resist, and I’m trying to step outside of my fashion comfort zone. This vintage mini-bag I’m wearing is also from Target. I’m telling you guys don’t sleep on Target! They have a great shoes and bags collection that’s affordable if you’re not trying to break your wallet. What better way to complete a vintage look than some vintage earrings? This colorful earrings is from H&M. I have so many crazy, cool, and sexy earrings guys I might just dedicate a post to my earrings collections.

Midwest: Spring Edition

While most Americans are enjoying the luxury of wearing skin revealing, lightweight spring outfits. Us Midwestern's are still dealing with weather in the 30 and 40 degrees. To be quite frank, 40 degrees weather is actually a pretty nice weather for us Minnesotan folks compared to the brutal cold weather we have been experiencing these past five months.

So yes the weather was pretty tolerable for me. I was able to get out of the house to get loose with a few ciders. Minnesota is known for having some of the best cider bars, so I knew I was in for a great treat when I visited Milk & Honey Ciders.

I wore a cafe spice tailored coat and its already a masterpiece on its own. So I decided to balance out the rest of my look with a simple white button up shirt, and jeans. This look can be styled with so many different styles of shoe such as pumps, flats or sneakers, just to mention a few. As you can see my choice of shoes is boots. This green block heeled boots is so vintage, and I thought it meshed perfectly with my thrifty purse. I love these woven earrings that I recently purchased. The pattern details on the earrings matches my glasses, which just adds more swag to this look.

Fashion Below Zero!!

Winter in Minnesota is like living in Antarctica minus the cute little penguins. The weather is mostly in the negatives, and it’s constantly snowing. I have never been a fan of winter and I don’t think that will ever change. I do have to admit I admire the fresh fluffy snow on top of the pine trees, and from my window view it always look as if I am in a gigantic snow globe.

There are a lot of winter sports and hobbies in Minnesota to indulge in to keep one occupied. Such as ice fishing, skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing just to name a few. I never took much interest in winter sports because of the process of layering up so I don’t freeze to death! It’s just a little too tedious for me, but if you can’t beat em, join em!

I partook in my first full blown winter activity last weekend and it was quite an experience to say the least. I went skiing for the first time ya’ll! Being the competitive person that I am, I went with the mindset of “this is a piece of cake! How hard is it to go down hill?” I was fooled! Skiing is extremely difficult and requires a lot of balance, and being physically fit. After a couple of falls, I got a hang of skiing a little bit but not quite. I guess I will not be receiving a season pass in the mail. Overall it was a learning experience and also reassured me that I need to get back in the habit of being fit.

Like any sport or hobby, the proper attire is required to have a great time. I got my snow pants from the JCPenney’s kids department. I’m pretty short guys, plus they were on clearance; you can’t beat that! My snow boots and gloves were purchased from Scheels, the boots were by Columbia. Colombia is little expensive, but on a good day you can find a decent sale. Being short and petite once again came in handy because I saved over 100 dollars on my boots and gloves by shopping in the kids department. My puffa Jacket was from H&M. I’ve had this Jacket in my closet for almost two years now. It just never quite matched any of my previous winter aesthetics, but now it was finally time to bust it out! The bright yellow blended perfectly with the backdrop of the fresh white snow.

New Year, New Adventures!

Saw this little cute house and I just couldn’t help myself. The vibrant colors are a perfect match for the extraordinary adventure I was on. My trip to find this photo had everything from fine dining on an ice cream cone to staring down a tiger. This was the perfect outfit to match the day.

It was a scorching hot 4th of July. I definitely was not trying to deal with heavy bundles of hair; or the humidity, which  gave my natural hair hell. What better way to deal with my hair problems than wrapping it up in a turban! Besides, I was oozing with confidence when my hair was wrapped up in my turban. This makes the frame of my face and eyes much more noticeable.

I have never been one to shy away from bright colors. I styled my Ankara turban with a maxi ankara skirt which has a high slit to show some leg action. Along with that I had a banana-yellow off-the-shoulder tassel top. I’m a complete sucker for bright slides! The orange slides I purchased from Target were the perfect fit to seal the deal.

Straws and Sun

It’s hard not to notice a lady wearing a vintage straw hat, with woven details and a smooth cotton band to top it off. Straw hats have been a hot trend for quite some time now, and can be worn in multiple ways based on your personal style and the occasion.

Whether you are doing some garden work around your house, taking a countryside trip with your girlfriends, or a picnic date with that special someone. A straw hat is a show stopper that can top off your look! It can be styled with a vintage polka dress, stripes with all sizes, bold prints, or linen pants with a blouse.

I wore this outfit to a festival in the summer, which sat next to a beautiful park complete with everything from tents set up for food, to a scenic lake view for those “wow” Instagram moments. I was going for a relaxing, comfortable look due to Minnesota’s sizzling weather, but to also have a chic side to it.  I styled this wide-brim straw hat with casual off white linen pants and a multi-striped cami bodysuit. The bodysuit gave the outfit a more vibrant look. For Accessories, I decided to go with the classic brown crossover bag, with braided slides. You guys know me, so of course I had to add pair of vintage cat-eyed sunglasses, for that much needed attitude.

HAVANA!

Hello there lovely people!

I'll finally be sharing all the details you guys have been requesting for this flirty Havana inspired look. When I first laid eyes on this pleated orange skirt, I had to get it! It was calling my name and I knew exactly how I wanted to wear it. I hit up my friend Amelia - who's currently in the process of launching her crochet clothing business - to help me bring my vision to life. Crocheting is a lot of work and I knew I was asking for the impossible with such limited time but she made the impossible possible! I was impressed with the final result of the top and it was even better than what I envisioned as she added some beads to give the top more detail. Sunflower yellow was the perfect color to style with my orange skirt because of how vibrantly and beautifully both colors complimented my complexion. My rose-gold mule and seashell purse added additional pops of color to the look while still keeping it subtle. I wore these Havana inspired earrings to complete this look and make it very aesthetically pleasing.

Memorial Day weekend in the City of Brotherly Love

During the month of May, I usually like to take a vacation because the semester is done and it's my birth month. My destination this time was Philadelphia. For those of you who have been keeping up with my blog, I mentioned in my very first post that I was raised in Philadelphia. My family still resides in Philly. This trip was somewhat different and very intimate. It was mainly to spend time with my family and attend my cousin's wedding. It also happened to be my birthday weekend so I figured I might as well celebrate my birthday while I'm down there. Two of my girlfriends decided to join me on this trip. As the days were approaching for my trip I was very excited to be reunited with my family and friends. The day before I left, I got a call early in the morning from my mother. Her brother passed away back home in Liberia. This sudden news put a damper on my trip but left me feeling grateful that I would have the opportunity to comfort my mother and grandmother in person. 

I arrived in Philly at noon on Thursday and the weather was insanely horrible! It was rainy and gloomy the entire day. Rainy days are honestly only meant for Netflix and chill but I had family business to attend to and not even the rain was going to stop me. I spent the entire day with my family at my grandmother's house. It was good to be around my family since I haven't seen them since January. Oh, and also happy to taste my mother's cooking again!

On Friday, I hung out with my friends and we decided to get into some day drinking activities. We hit a couple of spots downtown and South Philly. One of my favorite spots we went to was the SkyGarten rooftop bar. It's located on the 51st floor of the Three Logan Square building. I'm afraid of heights but shockingly I wasn't too scared. Seeing the entire view of Philadelphia is just breathtaking. 

I was going for sex in the city vibe with this look. Sophisticated but showing some skin in a tasteful manner. I turned this kimono robe into a wrap slit dress. I styled it with a beaded tassel earrings and a rose gold wrap around heels. I stayed away from wearing a necklace and bracelets with this look because my earrings and the kimono print were already making a strong statement.

It's Saturday and it's wedding day! I love weddings. Literally. My friends and I have a tradition where we attend a wedding together every summer. The idea of seeing two people that are in love share their vows is such a heartwarming experience. Plus, the food and cocktails are reasons why weddings are awesome!  My cousin's wedding was really beautiful from beginning to end. Her dress, the venue, the bridesmaids...everything was well put together. The couple families and friends came and show out! The bride was splurged with money. It is a tradition in Liberian and other West African cultures to throw money on the bride. Traditional cloths called Lappa were used as a red carpet for the bride and groom to make their entrance. My highlights of the night was the cocktail hour because there were a variety of finger foods and cute drinks. The couple's first dance was so cute. I saw so much chemistry and love between the newlyweds. My cousin definitely married her best friend. 

I wore an off the shoulder 1950s inspired floral circle dress. Floral prints are very spring and perfect for special occasions. I like how the top part of the dress fits and showcases my collarbones. For accessories, I wore a classic pearl stud. I didn't want any over the top jewelry to take away from the dress.  I had this rose-gold seashell clutch to match my shoes.

On Sunday I decided to have brunch with the girls. We had brunch at XIX Nineteen. At first I was very skeptical because it's an upscale restaurant and I find most upscale restaurant food to be gross and overpriced. Luckily the food was great with reasonable pricing. Later,  we went to Landmark for some drinks. Landmark has these sweet potato fries they serve with cinnamon mixed with a butter sauce and it's to die for! It's the first thing on my list to get when I visit Philly again. 

I wanted to wear prints and spring colors on this entire trip. This tie sleeves jumpsuit can be worn casual or dressy. I wore this jumpsuit causal but slightly dressy by wearing my 90s inspired chunky heels. For accessories I'm wearing this clear mini shoulder bag to add some playfulness to the look.

Finally it's Monday, my birthday! I usually have something planned on my birthday but this time I had no clue what I wanted to do. I figured I'll just go sightseeing and wine and dine later since I had a beautiful cocktail dress that I wanted to wear. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't doing it for me. It was another rainy and gloomy day. One of my friends decided to make fufu and pepper soup; a  popular Liberian cuisine. I invited a few friends over and we ate, listened to good music, and chat about life. Although my birthday did not turned out the way I expected, I still had a great birthday all thanks to my lovely friends. 

That pretty much wraps up my trip to Philly- by far one of the best trips I've taken. It was very intimate and filled with lots of love and relaxation. The Chunkier the Better!

Have you guys ever wonder what autumn looks and feels like at night? One word- beautiful! I decided to capture autumn at night and give you guys a glimpse of what it looks like- fashionable of course. For today's look I will be showing you guys how to rock a chunky turtleneck on a date night. Chunky turtlenecks are one of the coziest pieces of clothing to have in your closet for the fall and winter. I styled this nude chunky turtleneck with flare jeans, a chiffon maxi skirt, mid length leather skirt or skinny jeans also work. My shoes are not showing but I have on big platforms. Like I mentioned in previous posts, I prefer wearing platforms with flare pants because it gives me a good boost in height. For accessories, I am rocking a fabulous black bucket handbag. I love this bucket bag because it's easier for me to throw things into it whenever I am in a hurry. To add a little sass to the look, I am wearing oversized hoop earrings. For all you trend lovers out there, oversized earrings are a must have this fall and winter.

School Girl Chic

Fall is here and that means the leaves are changing, Halloween is around the corner, and thanksgiving will soon be creeping up. And oh, it's turtleneck season! That's right! So if you have some basic ole turtleneck sweaters in your closet and you have absolutely no clue how to make them stand out, stay tuned because I will be showing you guys multiple fall looks this entire week on how to style turtleneck sweaters.

For today's look, I decided to go with a '90s preppy look. Preppy trend is one trend that's great for fall. To achieve this look, I am wearing a basic long sleeve rust colored turtleneck. I styled it with a khaki suede button-down mini skirt. A circle or a pleated mini skirt can also be worn to achieve this look. Underneath the skirt, I am wearing a shimmery metallic legging that I recently purchased. The moment I spotted it, it was love at first sight. To top off this outfit is the blue and burgundy plaid trench. The colors not only pop but it also complete the preppy look. If a trench coat is not your thing or you simply don't have one then an over-sized sweater or blazer can be worn instead. For footwear, I am wearing one of my favorite metallic-flats. This look can also be styled with suede loafers or knee length boots. As we all know a '90s preppy look is not completed without the backpack.

Happy first day of summer! As you guys can see I started my summer a little early. I don't have a bucket list plan for this summer. I just plan to go with the flow. Ankara Prints: The Modern Way.

Yay the semester is finally over! Cheers to the summer! I am pleased I was able to pull through by God's grace. The weather was superb so my girlfriends and I decided to grab brunch at Stella's Fish Cafe and Prestige Oyster Bar. Stella's is one of my favorite restaurants in Minneapolis. It's located in the heart of uptown Minneapolis. It has one of the best rooftop scenery and the food is amazing. The brunch date was also a graduation celebration for one of my girlfriends Amelia on her accomplishment. Of course a nice day calls for some slaying........

If you guys noticed I have a new hair-do which I am loving! This hair is the Marley crochet. My hair looks heavy but it's pretty light and affordable. I like that it looks very natural and gives me that afrocentric look. I decided to wear something that screams afrocentric/bohemian and what better way to do it than incorporating Ankara print with flare. The Ankara baby doll top I am wearing was designed by one of my friend Mo. Her design aesthetic showcase the beauty of modern women fashion in Liberia. I love the color scheme and pattern of this top and the details on the the strap were hand braided which makes this top even more beautiful. My flare jeans is so hip. I love the extra pockets in the front and it also give me some leverage in height. I am short so anything that boosts my height is a plus! I wore heels with these jeans even though it's not showing. Platform heels are perfect with flare jeans especially if you need that extra height boost. With my top being a showstopper this yellow straw clutch was the perfect match to complete this look.
